Freedom of the Post? Social Media and Social Responsibility

More and more is being seen in the media about individuals being reprimanded, suspended or fired for posting something deemed inappropriate on the internet. Where does “freedom of speech” come into play? What is considered “invasion of privacy”? Can there be an invasion of privacy when nothing is really private on the internet? Where does social responsibility fit in? Have you ever posted something somewhere that you regretted? Is blaming the medium blame shifting and killing the messenger? What other questions come to mind?

A quick search of the internet brought up numerous examples where someone had posted a picture or words that someone somewhere classified as inappropriate. Some of the examples were for postings that occurred during times when the individual was supposed to be somewhere else. Did these sorts of reprimands occur before the internet? Is the internet really to blame? Is this an example of bureaucracies looking for ways to get rid of people they just want rid of? One of the items located was this power point presentation from Paul Dunay entitled: Five Ways Facebook Can Get You Fired. In the presentation he provides samples and suggestions.
