George Washington was born on February 22. Abraham Lincolnwas born on February 12.
In 1971 President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents’ Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America.
The Federal statute designates this day as Washington’s Birthday, but President Nixon’s proclamation declared the third Monday in February as “President’s Day.” As a child during the 50’s and 60’s, I remember how wonderful it was to get two Presidential Birthday’s to celebrate in February. The teachers spent time teaching about each of the presidents and always had those famous Washington and Lincoln red silhouettes facing each other surrounded by the hearts for Valentine’s Day on their bulletin boards. But, somewhere, someone thought that we should be celebrating all President’s or at least the two on just one day. Maybe someone thought that 44 Presidential Holidays were too many?
